The external speaker on my Samsung is no longer working. The device vibrates but it will not ring or play music and videos. I can hear everything fine when I plug in the headphones. I have tried checking all the settings on the device, but nothing seems to work. Can you help?"

Do Basic Troubleshooting for the Speakers

Before attempting any more invasive solution, it is important to do basic troubleshooting to determine the extent of the problem. Because this problem can manifest in numerous ways, the first thing you need to do is identify the problem. Is the sound coming from the speaker distorted in any way? Do you hear hissing sounds during playback or is the sound breaking up? Or are you not getting any sound at all. Some of these problems can occur if you dropped the device and it suffered some kind of hardware damage. But if they arise seemingly out of nowhere, they could be caused by a glitch in the settings or software.

  • See if the Headset is Causing the Issue

  • Some headsets and sound accessories can be causing the issues. Therefore you may want to remove any accessories; particularly Bluetooth based ones that are connected to the device. You should also turn off Bluetooth. Now try placing a call from the device and leave a message on your voicemail to test the sound.

  • Test the External Speakers

  • You can try testing your speakers in the following ways; Record a small video with the device and play it back to see if the speaker's issue is only when making or receiving calls. You can also use the voice recorder to test the sound quality.

Playback the audio or video recording via speakers to determine the quality of the sound. If you can hear the video or audio, then you can rule out a hardware problem and it is most probably software glitch causing the problem.

  • Remove the Device from the Case

  • Some cases, especially really thick ones can affect the proper function of the device and may even interfere with the speakers. Therefore, remove the case from the device and then test the speakers again. You may also want to clean your speakers since accumulated dirt can cause the speakers to malfunction.

  • Does your Phone show Headphones Plugin?

  • If the headphones are still plugged into the device, your speakers will not work. Most phones will show the headphones are plugged in on the notification bar. But the icon is small and can easily be overlooked. Try plugging in your headphones and unplugging them again to see if the icon is still there. If the device is stuck in headphone mode, you will not be able to hear sound from the speakers.

  • Ensure Do Not Disturb is Not Enabled

  • If "Do Not Disturb" is enabled on your phone, you may not be able to hear calls or other notifications from the speaker. Therefore turn off"Do Not Disturb" to see if this is causing the issue.

Methods to Fix Samsung Speaker Not Working

Once you have determined the extent of the problem and basic troubleshooting doesn't work, try one of the following solutions.

Method 1. Remove External Devices

The first thing you should do to try and fix the problem is to remove all external devices including anything plugged into the headphone jack or even selfie sticks.
