You've probably heard of the term "Brick" used to refer to an Android device that will not work normally or is broken in some way. But there are two types of bricked devices; a soft brick and a hard brick. And as you can probably already guess, a soft brick is easier to manage and fix than a hard brick. In this article, we are going to be looking at a soft brick, what it is and some of the ways you can fix a soft bricked Android device.

What Is the Difference Between Soft Brick and Hard Brick?

Apart from the fact that a hard brick is a much more serious situation than a soft brick, these two states vary in numerous ways including the following:

  • A soft brick occurs when the device experiences some software problems. These can happen while you are flashing custom ROM on the device or even upgrading the OS.

  • A hard brick can also occur when flashing custom ROM but it will often come about when the flashing process is incomplete, interrupted or wrong.

  • A soft brick can be easy to fix; all you need to do is flash a clean and working version of theAndroid OS on the device

  • A hard brick, on the other hand, is not so easy to fix. In most cases, you may need the services of a professional to help you resolve it. Even then, the professional may be unable to fix the device and you may have to purchase a new device.

How to Fix A Soft Brick Device

There are several ways to fix a soft-bricked device which depends on the situation you're in.

1.When the Device is stuck in a Boot Loop

A device stuck in the boot loop is one of the first signs that the device has been soft-bricked. The easiest way to fix this is to clear the cache partitions. You can clear the cache partition by entering the recovery mode. On most Android devices this can be done by pressing the power key and the volume key at the same time. Please note however that the procedure for entering recovery mode may vary from one Android device to another, so please check your device's guide for the precise procedure.

Once the device is in recovery mode, follow these steps to clear the cache partition:

Step 1: Use the volume buttons to scroll down the options on the screen until you highlight "wipe cache partition."

Step 2: Press the power button to highlight this option and then wait for the process to be completed.

Step 3: Once the process is complete, use the volume buttons again to select "Reboot system" and the device will reboot.

2.When Android Device Goes Straight into Recovery Mode

If your device is booting straight into recovery mode, this is a sign that there is a problem with the current ROM. The only way to fix this problem is to flash a new ROM. Here's how to do that:

Step 1: You should also back up the data on the device first. You can do that by selecting "Backup and restore" in recovery mode.

Step 3: Now download the ROM you would like to use and save it on your SD card. Put the SD card into the device and then select "Install zip from sd card" to continue.

Step 4: Using the volume keys to select the downloaded ROM and conform to the selection. Wait while the ROM is installed on the device.

The process may take a few minutes. When it is done, reboot the device.

3. When Android Device Boots into Bootloader Directly

If the device boots into the bootloader directly, flashing new ROM or even clearing the cache partition will not work to fix the device. In this case, the only way to repair it is to download and flash the original ROM from the manufacturer. Since different Android devices work very differently, we recommend checking with the device's manufacturer to find the latest ROM to install on the device.
